Te Hau-ā-Uru is a newly established kapa haka rōpū bringing together students from Buller, Westland and Greymouth High Schools, alongside passionate Māori rangatahi aged 14-29 from across the West Coast. Founded by Ngāti Waewae rangatahi Whakataerangi White, Aleigha Ngaamo, Ani Mason and Henare Mason, their kaupapa was born from a simple reality: opportunities for rangatahi to continue kapa haka outside of school on the West Coast are almost non-existent. Te Hau-ā-Uru is currently the only kapa haka rōpū outside of schools in the region, providing a pathway for those who want to continue learning, performing and growing in kapa haka beyond the classroom.

 

Te Hau-ā-Uru is a space where rangatahi can strengthen their identity and upskill. It provides the only opportunity on the West Coast for rangatahi to train consistently, develop their discipline, and perform at a level beyond school competitions. Our vision is to ensure kapa haka not only survives on the Coast, but thrives for generations to come by creating a sustainable pathway for the next generation of Māori leaders and performers.
