About ....

Ngāti Pōneke Young Māori Club

Founded in 1937, Ngāti Pōneke Young Māori Club (NPYMC) was created to support Māori moving to Wellington from across Aotearoa.

As the oldest pan-tribal Māori cultural group in Aotearoa, their legacy continues here in Wellington across generations of whānau who uphold and grow the kaupapa through kapa haka, waiata, te reo Māori, tikanga, and community.

For nearly 90 years, Ngāti Pōneke Young Māori Club has been a cultural home for all in the capital. The Club recently represented Aotearoa at the 10th China New Zealand Film Festival and Carnival, where 1978 had its world premiere. Their long-standing relationship with Wellington's Chinese community made this moment especially meaningful. Even better, some of the NPYMC members appear in our film, making this partnership feel truly special.

30% of every ticket sold goes directly to supporting the club and the incredible work they do.
