Riverton Heritage Museum and Tourist Centre Trust are a registered charity that owns and operates one of the country's best small museums – Te Hīkoi Museum. The trust is made up of a local Runaka representative, local Community Board representative and interested community members. The museum has few paid staff - it is mostly run by volunteers and all research and artefact collection care is done by amazing volunteers.

 

Their focus is sharing the stories of early Māori and European arrivals coming together on the south coast, through engaging displays and short film. The museum collection is significant in size and uniqueness, with the collection beginning more than 100 years ago, by early settlers of the area. The museum welcomes around 18,000 visitors a year - and they are proud to receive outstanding ratings for their experience, gift shop, and visitor information service. Their premises includes a custom ship theatre - which usually plays our introduction 15minute film - and is where we will be screening 1978!
